Where is austerity working well? In Greece, say Tories

Conservatives in the Welsh National Assembly have revealed, when looking for the benefits of austerity measures, they look to Greece and claim that it’s working well there. No mention of Britain. No mention of 20% unemployment in Greece. Nor the cut of 22% in the minimum wage (32% for young people). Nor cuts of 12% in basic pensions, and 30% in top up pensions paid for by workers themselves. Nor of 30% living in poverty, of soup kitchens and riots, of the polls showing support for the far left parties approaching half the voters.

During an exchange in the Welsh Assembly (Senedd), Conservative Economy Spokesperson Nick Ramsey AM was challenged to name one country where severe austerity measures were working. The answer Mr Ramsey gave was “Greece”.

Following the exchange, Plaid Cymru Assembly member Rhodri Glyn Thomas said:

It’s astounding that the Conservatives are not only ignorant about what is going on in Greece, but their Economy spokesperson is also unwilling to even pretend that his own party’s austerity measures are working well. What will get Wales’ economy going is a fiscal stimulus – government spending to support the economy and safeguard jobs.”
