Len McCluskey clear leader for Unite General Secretary

Ian’s UNITE site reveals that UNITE’s Executive Council (of which Ian is amember) today accepted a report on valid nominations to become candidates for General Secretary. Len McCluskey, back by United Left, has received almost two-thirds of all valid nominations, with the remainder split between three candidates, all from the Amicus side of the union. In second place is Les Bayliss who must now be described as the right-wing candidate (see here) and who has vocal supporters in the media, with Jerry Hicks trailing further behind in third.

Although Jerry Hicks undoubtedly represents a significant minority strand of the Left but, in spite of Len’s lead, his supporters would do well to weigh up the risk of allowing Les Bayliss to slip into the lead before they vote, especially since Hicks stands no chance of winning. The full details of the nominations are as follows:

  1. Len McCluskey, 829 valid nominations, including nominations from branches representing 368,986 members
  2. Les Bayliss, 214 valid nominations, including nominations from branches representing 137,942 members
  3. Jerry Hicks, 137 valid nominations, including nominations from branches representing 109,088 members
  4. Gail Cartmail, 97 valid nominations, including nominations from branches representing 37,836 members.

    Dear Mr McCluskey

We are sending this question to all four candidates in the election for Gen Sec of Unite.

We are a group of workers preparing to launch a two year programme to build an International Workers Aid Flotilla to Gaza. The Launch meeting will be in The Council Chamber, in the Town Hall, London Borough Camden on 25 October 2010. Our flotilla will be special in that it will be from workers all over the world in Solidarity directly to the unemployed and working people of Gaza. Will you please advise ASAP if you will support this initiative. More infor available upon request.

Len, I note that the voting sytarts tomorrow and you have not yet indicated that you will support the International Workers Aid Flotilla to Gaza. There can be many reasons for your failure to respond and I can only assume that on a salary and benefits ten times that of the average you have now more in common with the bosses than the workers. That you must defend Capitalism to retain your privilages. We are bitterly disappointed but not at all surprised.
