Florence Anderson: it takes guts to win

On International Women’s Day in the year of the 30th anniversary of the miners’ strike, we should remember the huge contribution of women to the miners’ struggle. One of those women is Florence Anderson, who said in 1984 that the children and grandchildren of the striking miners will have pride, “not only in what their dads did, but what their mams did as well.” Here’s the end of a sensational speech to the Durham Miners’ Gala in the year of the strike.

  1. It may be nearly thirty years since Florence Anderson spoke those words. However the message she delivered is not outdated.the words she spoke are perhaps even more relevant today.

May the spirit behind her words ever triumph!

The trouble with International Women’s Day is that it ignores the difference between working class ladies and bourgeois females.

    Very good.
However, on this International Women’s day we should remember that it corresponds with a war breaking out 100 years ago and the women of that day stood out big time.
The trigger only needs to be pulled on the suffragettes and the whole idea will take a new course.
Those women were militaristic, determined, sexually molested and tortured by the State.
Their whole credibility was shattered by State propaganda which would put Harman and co into the shade.
Womens day in 2014 should have always been about the suffragettes……but there is still time.
