Bob Crow: a reporter’s story

Bob CrowIt was just another average afternoon as a news reporter. I’d bagged a good story and was now waiting for the train back home. Suddenly I see Bob Crow along with other RMT activists waiting to board the same train. He’d only met me on a handful of occasions but he still knew me by first name.

Immediately he asked if I wanted to travel with him and his colleagues. I accepted and the next hour and a half flew by, with a mixture of hardnosed union politics, two beers each and laugh-out-loud comedy, much of it provided by Bob with his colleagues getting in a few friendly digs along the way. Disability protesters target Atos benefit test centres

atos bigDisability campaigners laid siege to Atos assessment centres up and down the country today, in a bid to increase public pressure on the government to end what many see as a war against disabled people.

Union activists, Disabled People Against Cuts and Black Triangle targeted 144 assessment centres where people are told whether they are able to work and if they are still entitled to benefits. Continue reading →

Breaking: Unite launches legal action over Grangemouth sacking

Unite launched legal action today after Grangemouth convenor Mark Lyon was sacked by Ineos.

Mr Lyon who has worked at the company for 25 years was tried in absence and told of his dismissal earlier today.

Unite said it will appeal the company’s decision and issue an employment tribunal claim for unfair dismissal and victimisation for trade union reasons. Continue reading →

Blacklist beaten – Frank Morris reinstated on Crossrail

Frank Morris reinstatedBlacklisted UNITE union shop steward Frank Morris is returning to work on the Crossrail project on 9 September. This is a massive victory, not just for UNITE but the whole of the trade union movement.

Frank Morris came to symbolise the struggle the unions are waging against the illegal blacklist of their members by major construction firms after he was dismissed last September.
