Although we don’t know with absolute certainty what Andrew Mitchell did or did not say as he approached the Downing Street gates late one evening in September, it is surely far more likely that he did say what is attributed to him rather than that the police fabricated his words (are they really that machiavellian to have thought up the public school insult ‘plebs’ if he didn’t actually say it?). Plebs take over the asylum: Andrew Mitchell’s office occupied
Andrew Mitchell, the Tory former chief whip who famously told a police officer to “learn your fucking place, you fucking pleb”, may wish he hadn’t made enemies of the old bill. For who will defend him now his own constituency office has been taken over by activists fed up with austerity and the government’s contempt for ordinary people?
The offices were occupied by students and community activists living in Birmingham, where Mitchell is the only Tory MP. In a statement, they said: “Austerity clearly isn’t working. We have huge and painful cuts to health, education and welfare but the deficit is getting bigger not smaller. The Tories plan has clearly not worked and they need to change it or we need a new government.”
Flashman Mitchell’s message to the “lower orders”
It’s extraordinary how a gaffe can do serious political damage. But of course Andrew Mitchell’s explosion at the police “best learn your fucking place…..You’re fucking plebs” wasn’t a gaffe at all. Like Romney’s dismissal of 47% of the US population as shirkers dependent on the State, the language was a wide-open revelation of the inner attitudes, normally kept firmly padlocked away until once ensconced in power those born to rule can mete it out to the serfs physically, financially and power-wise.
