The time and place for an all-BAME shortlist is now in Edmonton

BAME Labour LogoIn the last few days, Andy Love has announced that after 18 years as an MP, he will not be standing again in Edmonton. It is a very diverse north London constituency with a majority of almost 10,000 or about 24%, with a wide range of ethnic minorities comprising 73% of the population. Labour has an opportunity to make sure its candidate reflects that diversity. If ever there was a time and place for an all-BAME shortlist, it is now in Edmonton.

London is the most multicultural city in Europe and on the whole, as was evident during the Olympics, it is more than comfortable with its diversity. Political parties, however, don’t see fit to respond to this comfort by ensuring  that its political representatives reflect this diversity. Continue reading

BAME representation: “community leaders” or genuine advocates?

Linda_Bellos_Marc_Narendra_and_Munira_3Back in the 1980s, a new generation of radical black leaders like Bernie Grant and Sharon Atkin emerged in the Labour Party, determined not only to increase minority representation, but also to commit the Party to socialist policies. The struggle for Black Sections took place against the backdrop of uprisings within the inner cities in 1981 and 1985.

Thirty years on, although the representation of BAME communities has improved in parliament and on local councils, it continues to lag behind the proportions in the general population and among the Party’s membership, and the evidence of racial disadvantage is all around us, in employment, education and housing. Keith Vaz’s place on Labour’s national executive challenged

Keith Vaz, MP for Leicester East, appears to be in a spot of bother with the party, and it could lose him the seat on Labour’s national executive which he has held since 2007. There have been a number of accusations about his financial affairs but this time it relates to BAME Labour, the organisation to which he owes his place on the executive. The party was this weekend facing calls to investigate whether he was entitled to that place, on the basis that he hadn’t paid his subs and wasn’t eligible to stand. Continue reading
