Let’s look at what you would’ve won. No more privatisations. No market fundamentalism. An extension of trade union rights. A thriving mining industry using the most advanced technology in the world. A joined up approach to finance and industry. A strong labour movement. Communities proud of their history. All under three successive Labour governments, dating from 1987 to 2001. It was a time that saw the 1945 settlement strengthened and deepened. Social democracy renewed was the common sense of the age, so much so that they wrote it into the European Union’s constitution. Britain, by no means a perfect society, was nevertheless more at peace, more at ease. It had earned itself a respite from ugly industrial strife and the attempts to dismantle British industry by Margaret Thatcher’s Conservatives. Continue reading

Join another round of protests against the ‘Bedroom Tax’ next weekend (30 March)
Following the nationwide series of protests on 16 March, a further fifty protests are taking place on Saturday 30 March throughout Britain against the Bedroom Tax. to send a further message to the Tory-led government that we’re united in opposition to this cruel, unworkable and counter-productive attack on poor and vulnerable people. These events are open to everyone, and organisers include people from 8 political parties, five Trade Unions, and a host of tenants’ organisations. If you wish to attend any one of these events, please click the event details in the (blue writing in the brackets) of whichever event. This will take you through to a sign up page where you can see who else is attending. You can also view and download the protest poster, and chat with your fellow protesters. Join the protests against the ‘Bedroom Tax’
This weekend, Saturday 16 March, over 50 protests are taking place (mostly at 1pm) throughout Britain against the Bedroom Tax, to send a clear and unequivocal message to David Cameron that we’re united in opposition to this cruel, unworkable and counter-productive attack on poor and vulnerable people.
The majority of the protests have been organised by Labour Left with others involving the SNP, Greens and SWP together with various Trades Councils and Trade Unions. Labour Left acknowledges and thanks all parties for maintaining a broad united front on the Bedroom Tax issue. Over 40 UK Uncut actions target Starbucks over tax avoidance & cuts impact on women
Growing public anger at Starbucks was clear yesterday as over 40 of their shops across the UK- including in Liverpool, Cardiff, Bristol and Shrewsbury- were targeted by the anti-cuts direct action network, UK Uncut.
In central London a creche and women’s refuge were set up in Starbuck’s flagship stores, and in Birmingham people slept in sleeping bags on the floor to highlight homelessness. In Barnet, activists turned Starbucks into a library, while in York protesters handed out free tea and coffee in store. Continue reading
